Tips!
- Grocery stores use a term called "Skinner Box". This means they FORCE you to walk by the most desirable items to get where you need to go (the checkout). They force you to stand by the candy while the person in front of you digs for their Club Card. To avoid, go to a checkout with magazines.
- The healthiest foods are on the perimeter of the store. As soon as you come in, it's produce. Then it turns into the deli section, followed by the meat section. The refrigerated section is next (eggs, milk, yogurt). Then, the bread. In nearly every grocery store, you can make a loop by those items, without going down the cookie aisle.
- If it doesn't mold, it isn't worth your time. Leave a plate of strawberries out next to a Big Mac. The strawberries will be hideous in less than a few days. The Big Mac... Months. If the environment can't properly digest this stuff, why do you think you should try?
- Not all frozen food is bad for you. Same for canned/tinned items. We cook our meals with frozen vegetables a few nights a week. Chances are your store has their own low-priced brand that is flash frozen.
- Don't go shopping hungry! Please!! When I do this, I look in the pantry a few days later and it's just awkward.
- I differ from many of my colleagues on this, but. I will NOT tell you to get anything fat-free. Low fat, maybe. The amounts of sodium and sugars that go into a product to re-tastify it isn't worth it.
- Many supermarkets have sales on items that are going to go bad soon. I look for proteins and produce I can use that night for dinner. You might be able to get a great cut of meat for less!
